Sir,
In connection with the present state of
affairs in Canton on which I have addressed you in various
despatches, I have the honour to enclose for your
information copy of a despatch dated 24th May, 1926, from
Mr. J. F. Brenan, His Majesty's Acting Consul-General,
Canton, to His Majesty's Minister, Peking, copy of which
was sent to me.
2.
Lieutenant Colonel L'Estrange Malone claims
to be the Peking Correspondent of the Daily Herald (London)
and an ex-Member of Parliament for East Leyton. I was
advised by His Majesty's Consul-General, Shanghai, that Colonel Malone had visited Peking and Shanghai and that
at the latter place he had been in close touch with local
labour unions and the local Kuo-min-tang. Colonel Malone
arrived in Hong Kong on the 14th May and left for Canton
on the 15th May. He returned to Hong Kong on the 23rd May
and left ostensibly for England on 27th May.
3.
Mr. Brenan's despatch gives an account of
Colonel Malone's activities in Canton. Colonel Malone
called upon the Colonial Secretary in Hong Kong but the
interview added little, if anything, to the information
already conveyed in Mr. Brenan's despatch. During his
stay in Hong Kong Colonel Malone's conduct was discreet
and unobjectionable.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
&C..
LIEUTENANT COLONEL L.C.M.S. AMERY, M.P.,
